Praising God's Eternal Nature at New Year's

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” —Revelation 1:8

At year’s end, we come to a moment of reflection and are given a perfect opportunity to set a new/modified path for ourselves as we enter into the new year.

An important thing to meditate on, as we look within ourselves, as we look at where we’re headed, is to think about the immutable and unchanging attributes of God, embodied through Jesus Christ who is speaking here via a vision from John. Though we as humans go through a process of making resolutions, of making goals for how we will end up the following year, the Creator is eternal, the beginning and the end.

Think about all the things of 2008 – the civil wars, the global financial crisis, the sports victories, the scandals, the presidential election…and the personal ups and downs with family, friends, finances, significant others, spouses. And within this yearly turn of our world and our individual lives, is the All Mighty, who cuts through that ‘drama,’ to remain the rock that He is for each of us, to carry us, to uplift us.

Let us rejoice, then, this new year for Him and know that no matter what happens in 2009 that He will be there, never-changing, always loving, reaching us in the quiet and somber moments, providing the enriching experiences…He indeed is the alpha, the omega, the first and the last.

Praise: That the Lord is eternal – remaining pure and whole in essence no matter how our world is shaped by events, by people, by circumstances.

Prayer: That we are always mindful of His perfect and everlasting nature – and that we keep our eyes on Him throughout 2009.

Prayer for Today: Lord, we thank You greatly for each day and we thank You for the collection of days, 365 to be exact, that You brought us through to complete 2008. We look to You and Your eternal essence as we move toward 2009. Please inspire us to do great things in 2009 – and speak to us in the hard times, when our globe becomes filled with turmoil, that You are indeed the everlasting rock, the foundation for everything we have. We praise You, Lord, and our lives in this upcoming year to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
