PRAYER + PRAISE
The Lord Grants us Sight
- Adam R. Cole // October 7, 2008
39Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." 40Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?" 41Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. —John 9: 39-41
Jesus’s act of giving sight to the blind man is one of the greatest miracles He produced when He walked this earth, when He spat on the ground, made a clay substance that He put on the man’s eyes, told the man to go wash in pool of Siloam, and there that man received his sight. Following this transformation in this man’s vision, much controversy resulted – the Pharisees doubted the essence of what they saw before them and tried to entangle Christ in wrongdoing, for healing on the Sabbath – and they cast out the blind man when he told them about following God, about worshipping Him and those that do His will, will be heard.
Jesus would end up confronting the Pharisees. They come across His path just after a deep profession of faith by the blind man. Jesus answers with the above, trying to emphasize that those who think they can ‘see’ are guilty of sin, but those who are blind, are given redemption over their sin.
This passage speaks more than anything about humility and how we are supposed to come to the Lord, as those blind, as those that seek Him for true sight – that we come to Him, not looking for blessings, but just to express our hearts to Him. But it is those who claim to see already, who feel that their power is of themselves, who boast to be sinless, that they will be made ‘blind’ and their guilt of sin will remain with them.
Let us, then, come to the Lord as this blind man, seeking only to be faithful, and allowing the Lord to do His perfect work in us, so that we may see His righteous ways inscribed in our hearts.
Praise: That Christ gives us sight out of blindness.
Prayer: That we do proclaim to be able to see, but rather be blind, and allow God and only Him to grant us sight, which ultimately is eternal life.
Prayer for Today: Dear Lord, we pray to You today, that You give us sight to see, that You give us sight in our hearts, and for us to realize that indeed, we are sinners, and need Your infinite grace to be justified, to allow us to receive the great prize of life, eternal life, despite our blemishes. For You were blameless, Lord, and died for us. We recognize that and honor that, and give our lives to You. In Jesus Name, we pray – Amen
