Walking in His Truth

Teach me your way , O Lord, and I will walk in your truth, give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. —Psalm 86:11

In order to fulfill our calling to be a child of God, we must be devoted to Him, to be devoted to following His way of living holy and righteous. Most simply: we must walk in His truth, as we walk in His light.

Psalm 86 is a psalm of praise, thought to be from David speaking within the context as he is being attacked by Saul. It calls to God in ways like these: “I am devoted to You,” and “For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.”

Taking this sense of heartfelt praise, of sincere devotion, we then view the verse above, a sincere request to the Lord to be taught in His way, and then a promise to walk in a way of truth, with an undivided heart, with a reverent fear of the Lord.

Walking in the ways of God and walking in His truth are powerfully linked in this Psalm, as these two concepts are linked throughout the Bible. Many believe that truth is relative, as in truth to someone may not be truth to another; however, divine truth, truth that is God and from God is absolute.

Jesus, as He speaks to a confused Thomas (how can we know the way?), proclaims to be the truth, the way, and the light. Those who want to come to the Father must come through Him. [John 14:6].

From this Psalm and from the words of Christ, we can infer this: truth has been delivered from God through Jesus, such that if we follow Jesus, we are led in truth and, therefore, led in the ways of God.

Praise: That Jesus has come to teach us and lead us in the Way.

Prayer: That we are able to see and experience the deepness of God’s truth in order to truly walk in line with the truth.

Prayer for Today: Lord, we thank You for You, for Your everlasting essence that You pour into us, day in and day out. We thank You for life, eternal life. Lord, we know that You have commanded us to walk in a way worthy of You, so that we reflect You to all. Through Your Son, Jesus, we can walk as You’ve called, in a way that follows in line with the truth that You have revealed to Your people. Open our hearts to follow obediently, to learn from Christ, and respond in that truth. We fear Your Name, O Lord, and want to make our paths of and for You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
